How to calculate

Formula

Result = average of the answers for each pair of adjectives

Each pair of opposites (e.g. "Slow" × "Fast") becomes a numeric scale — usually 1 to 5 or 1 to 7. The result is the average of the answers for THAT pair specifically: there is no single score combining every pair in the survey.

Number the scale

Assign numbers to the points between the two extremes (e.g. 1 = completely "Slow", 5 = completely "Fast").

Work out the average per pair

Add up the answers for each pair of adjectives and divide by the number of respondents — each pair has its own average.

Compare the pairs with each other

Put the averages side by side to see which attributes are perceived more strongly and which more weakly.

Worked example

Hypothetical example, for illustration only

Imagine 30 answers for the pair "Complicated (1) × Simple (5)":

  • Total of the 30 scores: 111
111 ÷ 30Result: Pair average = 3.7 (closer to "Simple")

How to interpret the result

  • The closer to one of the extremes, the stronger the perception tied to that adjective — an average of 3.7 on a scale up to 5 shows perception leaning towards "Simple", but not extreme.
  • Compare the pairs with each other within the same survey: one attribute with a low average among several high ones points to exactly where perception is weakest.
  • Running the same survey before and after a change (product, campaign, support) is the most reliable way to know whether perception really shifted.

Common mistakes

  • Using pairs of adjectives that are not genuinely opposites — that confuses the respondent and distorts the average.
  • Swapping the order of the extremes between questions without warning (sometimes the positive side on the left, sometimes on the right) — it produces answers by habit rather than by real perception.
  • Including too many pairs in the same survey — the respondent's attention drops and the last answers become less reliable.
